Helping Your Chid Develop Their Social Skills

How To Help Your Child To Develop Their Social Skills

Some children, and in fact adults, are more socially adept than others. However, it doesn’t come naturally to everyone so don’t worry if your child isn’t the most popular kid in school; it’s a skill that can be learned and worked on. Read on for some advice from a preparatory school in Middlesex.
It’s important that our children form meaningful bonds when they’re young, with both adults and other children. They need to know what types of interactions are appropriate and how to empathise with others. They also need to understand how to adapt themselves to suit different social situations. These are basic and necessary skills that all kids need to develop, amongst others like learning to follow the rules, taking turns, staying calm and ignoring distractions.

How Can I Help My Child?

The first place all children learn social skills as at home, with you. With that in mind, it’s highly important that we model the behaviour we want our kids to learn. In fact, at times, what we do is more important than what we say. So, you should always show respect to others, be kind to strangers, display confidence and remember your manners.

Always discuss feelings with your children; both their own and those of others. Being able to identify when people are sad, angry, excited or a whole host of other emotions is an important skill because it allows a child to cope with their own feelings and recognise how to respond to other people.

.
Practise makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to introduce your child to a range of social activities and games. Even if they are reluctant and shy at first, it will truly help them become more confident in interacting and communicating with other people. Social skills are important throughout life, so the earlier you start helping your child learn them, they’ll have an easier time at school and even in their future careers.
