We took the train to Hinton Admiral, the nearest train station. It is four miles from the campsite and I booked a taxi on the train by using a website for a local taxi firm called Radio Cabs, It was so easy and my taxi was there waiting. It cost me £12, money well spent as they dropped me right at the campsite reception.
We went into the reception which doubles as a well stocked and very well priced shop. They sold all camping supplies and toys as well as food that wasn't over inflated - perfect for families on a budget. There is also a takeaway on site. We checked in and were shown where our pitch was, we were given a tent label and went off to start our little holiday. The pitches are available from £15 per night, based on two people sharing, and they also offer electric hook up and hardstanding pitches, although you may need to pay extra.
The campsite has toilet/shower facilities, but you might be placed some way from them and it can be a trek in the middle of the night. That could be a bit awkward if you're pregnant, or a young child. There is also a laundrette on site to wash any dirty clothes you might have on your holiday. The campsite has plenty of things to do for kids, there is a play park for the children and there are loads of woods for kids to run around in and explore. we hired bikes from Trax Cycle Hire and it is an affordable way to get around the new forest. Outside the campsite there are ponies roaming the new forest and you can get quite close to them, but you cant touch them!
The website says ''Holmsley campsite occupies part of what used to be Holmsley Airfield in WWII - one of 12 New Forest wartime airfields and Advanced Learning Grounds. Now with a slightly different role, the site accommodates thousands of campers every year, offering them a beautiful and unique forest base for camping holidays and outdoor activities.''
Check out the campingintheforest website for more campsites in the area and advice on camping, including a list of things you will need.
