Still Waiting For Our Hotpoint Modification

A year ago I discovered that my tumble dryer was one caught up in the scandal of being recalled or modified to prevent it from catching fire. In some cases the fluff from the tumble dryer is meeting with  the heating element and catching fire. We were advised to not leave the tumble dryer unattended, but for us it was easier not to use the tumble dryer. I do have a six year old, so why would I risk using something that could burn my house down. I went on to their website and registered my details and the tumble dryer serial number but my heart sank when I realised mine was affected. It is a few years old and it seems even worse that I have been using it since about 2006 with the risk of it catching alight.

I had an email to say that they had received my details and i would get a date within 8 weeks. Within that 8 weeks, I did receive an email and I was told that I would get it repaired in December. By now the weather was warmer and the need for the tumble dryer was less. So I waited patiently for December to come.

I was offered a new one for £99, but as the problem was that of the manufacturer I wondered why we would have to fork out for a new one. I really didn't seem fair on us having to by a new dryer, and even worse that we were only allowed to buy a new one from Hotpoint. Did I really want to pay out for another Hotpoint when this had happened to my first one? And I am a single parent, on a really tight budget, so why where would I find £99

As Autumn came, we were offered a new Hotpoint for £49 if we collected it from Currys. Fab! I thought, its more affordable BUT we were not allowed to get it delivered, it was a collection only offer and as I live over 20 miles away from the nearest Currys and I don't drive - this option was not applicable to me. I took to Twitter to see if I could arrange delivery from my nearest Currys, but Hotpoint told me that I had to pay the £99 if I wanted it delivered. WHAT? I had to pay £50 for the delivery of a tumble dryer?

I was left to wait until December, so I waited and waited ..........and waited. Now it is 28th December and I haven't heard from Hotpoint regarding a modification. I took to Twitter again and hopefully something will be sorted out. But surely this is such poor customer service and so many customers have been left out of pocket with the whole Shambles of a recall. I spoke to some other bloggers and asked about their experience and most of them had an opinion about the way they were treated too.

'' Mine still hasn't been done! The initial offer email with a link to upgrade it for a new one no longer works and you have to pay to change it for another model which isn't acceptable ''  says Lisa from leeleeloves.co.uk

'' Mine was done in Dec, a year after I applied for the modification! The whole situation is absolutely awful. Considering it's a manufacturer fault which could potentially be deadly & they offer a slight discount on a new one. Ours was only a couple of years old as it was so why should we pay? Everyone effected should be supplied with a new defect free machine free of charge with disposal of the old machines '' Says Charlotte from www.thehomethatmademe.com/

''We called early in the year when it was first announced to add our names on the the extremely long queue. We were estimated January 2017 but when we rang back up in September to enquire if the list for our area had gone down by much we were offered a slot for two weeks later! It's always worth contacting them again and explaining you have children or if a member of the family has a disability as this can move you up the list as a priority'' Says Carla from www.rtoatsblog.com

''We gave up waiting and brought a new one on their scheme as we were also moving house and didn't want to risk the old one in the new house.''
Says Cerys from rainydaymum.co.uk

''I did mine before it went viral. I saw someone mention it and called in the middle of this year.
Had a date for early August. Pushed to end of Sept then Dec. Complained in Sept and got a brand new one instead for free as a replacement.''
Says Sam from www.testingtimeblog.com

So I am not the only person who has been waiting, some have given up waiting. Surely if there had been such a major problem with this, they should have employed more people to get the modifications done. It is dangerous because more people are using their tumble dryers because it is a cold winter and tumble dryers can be on for hours and hours drying clothes for a family. When you buy a product, you expect it to be safe and if it isn't then something should be done straight away.

Waiting a year for a modification is a joke! Now my own modification is over due and Hotpoint have admitted this, then I am eager to see what is going to happen now. I have been in touch with Hotpoint over Twitter and we will see where it goes from there.

  9. What a complete mess! We have a Hotpoint too, luckily not effected, however clearly not acceptable to delay for this long - Common sense would suggest that it would be more cost effective to just replace - after all employing engineers and dealing with complaints as well as bad publicity is costing them ore than £100 a go!

  10. I used to have a tumble dryer, but it kept shrinking my clothes, they are really useful too

  11. I totally forgot about this...We have a Hotpoint one which needs looking at. We haven't used it since we found out it was faulty. I asked for the repair but haven't heard anything since. I'm not too bothered. I don't miss using it at all.

  12. We waited over a year too! I posted on their Facebook wall complaining and got a response and repair date for the week after! If I hadn't had complained I think I'd still be waiting

  32. This sounds like a nightmare. It's not something I would deal with, it would stress me out too much!

  33. I had a letter asking me to check whether mine was one of the models needing modifying. Luckily it wasn't but they still keep sending me letters asking me to check & claim I never registered it when I know I did. Worries me how it would affect peoples house insurance if they had to make a claim as surely using a faulty machine would throw all sorts of problems up. Hope you get yours sorted out soon.

  34. My mum is in the same position! Still hasn't heard anything!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's just not acceptable, especially to be waiting such a long time and then have the date pushed back. How long are they going to keep pushing it back for? When will it end?

  42. We had so many problems with our Hotpoint dryer a couple of years ago when we had only had it a couple of months. After them sending out several people to repair it and it still wasn't fixed, we ended up managing to get Appliances Online to take it back and we spent a little extra for an LG one which has been fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  43. it must be a nightmare being caught up in this, hope it gets sorted soon

  48. Good luck with it - luckily I wasn't effected but my sister in law was and got it sorted in the end

    ReplyDelete
  49. It is such a shambles considering how dangerous they are, mine was quite old so I paid for the small charge for a new one.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I had a similar issue with my old washer, some component could catch fire - took ages and a letter to the companies head office to get someone out to replace the part (I can't use a telephone, they initially refused to send someone out unless I gave them a phone number), but when they replaced a part they broke something so I ended-up having to get a new machine. In all fairness I needed a new one anyway, but what a faff!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wow, I hope you get this sorted, this has been a real danger for some families

    ReplyDelete
  52. How can it take so long for such a large comapany to rectify such a dangerous problem

    ReplyDelete
  53. This is ridiculous to mess you around like this, I don't use mine anymore prefer to use a hot clothes rack

  57. I have given up with tumble dryers since i worked at a hotel years ago and it burst into flames and set fire to the laundry room.Thank goodness it was noticed and the fire brigade called before the fire spread.Put me off using one for life and they are also expensive to run so personally i would do without it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I hadn't heard about this problem, hopefully you'll get sorted soon

  60. Ive always had miele one's they last forever x

  61. This is a disgrace from Hotpoint! Hardly ideal to be without a tumble dryer during the winter months when you have kids :( Keep the pressure on and the negative publicity and hopefully that will speed things along for you and others. Have you contacted BBC Watchdog?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh my gosh!!!! £99 ? what a cheek! You should be given one for free after all the hassle and waiting!
Good on you for not using it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Never owned a tumble drier although I know it would help with condensation in the home. Would never leave one on unattended that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete

  71. Oh wow! You've had to wait a long time, I think it's awful that they haven't been out to fix it yet - probably hoping you & others will give up & pay for a new one

    ReplyDelete

  74. I haven't had a tumble dryer for years (and yes it is a nuisance not having one) but I have had nothing but trouble with them. This story is frightening.

    ReplyDelete
  75. OH MY !! This is awful !! I have seen your posts on Hotpoint Twitter and I am disgusted you havent been dealt with yet. I can't believe that they only offered a replacement if you paid for it ... and then to say if you want it to be delivered it will be £50 more ... WHAT !!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh my goodness; how awful that people are having to wait for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  77. How awful! Some people will risk using it as they want dry clothes for their children etc. Really hope you get it sorted soon & all the other people still waiting xx

  81. I think it's outrageous that they have not put safety of their customers first. I hope your problem gets resolved.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How frustrating it must be hopefully you get it sorted soon. I have to admit I don't have one exactly for that reason because I keep reading some horror stories about them catching fire, but it would be such a handy thing to have

I hang my washing on racks, making the house look like Widow Twanky's! Maybe it's just as well, when I realise the alternative! I'm sorry you've had so much bother.

  95. That's terrible! Hotpoint should be ashamed tbh! Hope you get it sorted soon.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I've read many comments about Hotpoints lousy customer service

    ReplyDelete
  97. A nightmare. Think it would be sorted a lot sooner as it is not your fault and you shouldn't have to pay. Really stressful.

    ReplyDelete
  98. What a nightmare for you, hope you get it sorted soon. I couldn't live without a dryer with kids

    ReplyDelete
  99. Nothing worse than waiting on an appliance you need. I have stopped tumbling at home as it got expensive and now we go once a week to the local laundromat to do it, it works out cheaper and can get some shopping done while it does the whole week at one time.....

    ReplyDelete
  100. That's pretty shocking considering the element of danger their products pose!

    ReplyDelete
  101. this must be so frustrating. Hotpoint are such a shambles. I hope everything works out for you

    ReplyDelete
  102. This is terrible. I remember this happening and just assumed that they would replace them for free. I wonder how many people thought the same.

    ReplyDelete
  103. This is so frustrating for you, I hope they sort it soon!

    ReplyDelete
  104. A nightmare and frustrating time for you sorting this out.

    ReplyDelete
  105. What a nightmare! I can't believe how long you have had to wait! They should be ashamed of themselves, this is a safety issue and they should be treating this as urgent!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Oh my days this is really shocking! I cant believe the terrible customer service they have shown - especially with a potentially lethal fault with their product!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I'm amazed how this story hasn't had more attention in the main stream media? I like the way they say you can still use the machine but don't leave it unattended...what - by a fireman? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  108. Really hope you get this resolved soon! What a ridiculous amount of time to wait. Mine was one of the faulty ones, the knocked my appointment back 4 times, then eventually came to sort it

    ReplyDelete
  109. its scary to think something like this could happen without you knowing nothing about it!

    ReplyDelete
  110. wow that terrible service from hotpoint it must be a nightmare for you having to wait all this time

    ReplyDelete
  111. Appalling, whatever happened to good old fashioned customer service. Fingers crossed that this is sorted out soon

    ReplyDelete
  112. Oh no what a shame!! Must be extremely frustrating time....I've never owned a Hotpoint dryer but after reading this will steer clear in future. Hope it gets resolved asap for you!! x

    ReplyDelete
  113. Don't have a tumble dryer, have other appliances which I have never registered. Hope you and others are sorted soon its crap from the big companys

    ReplyDelete
  114. This whole thing is very poor. No reason for it to take this long

    ReplyDelete
  115. Gosh that's awful! I'd never expect that from such a well-known company, I hope it all gets sorted soon for you.

    ReplyDelete
  116. It's shocking the way some companies treat paying customers. Their product is downright dangerous and they still can't get their behinds in gear to come and fix it!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Oh no! I know a few people that are in the same situation as you and I really feel for you. It's not a small fault with the dryers - there's a serious risk that they could catch fire with some devastating repercussions. I really think that Hotpoint should be doing more to help people in your situation, this has been going on far too long already :-(

    ReplyDelete
  118. It seems to me that a lot of big companies are happy to drag their heels instead of dealing with product recalls quickly. You would think the government should intervene and slap them with a fine if they don't get things sorted within a reasonable time.
