Interview with Pamela Ford, author of The Continental Breakfast Club series

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I really like plotting—except when I tie the plots into knots and then can’t figure out how to make them work! I also love “having written.” I’m stealing that line from the author, Dorothy Parker who said, “I hate writing, I love having written.” Writing can be really hard work, but the satisfaction at the end is tremendous.

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Ideas come to me from many different directions—an article in a newspaper or magazine, a chance encounter, someone’s funny experience. . . I have a file where I keep ideas for future reference. Unfortunately, not every idea holds up to the passage of time, and sometimes I wonder what I thought was so great about an idea I saved.

What is the scariest thing that ever happened to you?

I was one of seven crew members on 33’ sailboat doing a two-day race up Lake Michigan. A huge storm came in during the night with intense winds, big waves, and cloud cover that blocked out any light from the moon and stars. While the boat was screaming along in the pitch black, our foresail began to tear, our GPS went out, and the thought crossed my mind that we could die out there.

What advice would you give budding authors?


Keep learning. Get Debra Dixon’s book, “Goal, Motivation & Conflict,” and apply it to your writing. If she’s still doing workshops—attend one. The info I learned at her workshop was a turning point in my writing career.

Do you snack when you’re writing? Favorite snack?


Yes, but snacking usually means I’m procrastinating, because if I’m snacking my hands can’t be typing! I really like chocolate chips on pretzels—set a chocolate chip in each of the three spaces of a heart-shaped pretzel, then eat (no melting necessary). Tastes just like a chocolate-covered pretzel.



What’s your next project?
It’s a toss-up. I’ll either do another Continental Breakfast Club book or write a sequel to my historical romance, To Ride a White Horse. I’ve had so many requests for a sequel to To Ride a White Horse that I’m beginning to feel the pressure to get going on it.
