Tips on keeping wam this winter

With the threats of the worst winter since 1947, I dashed out and bought Tilly winter snow boots, a new snow suit (which she hates as it means she is restricted by wearing clothes!) and loads of hats and gloves - thats the extent of my panic buying. But I also had a look online for some tips on how to keep warm this winter. I wanted to share a few with you all.

  • your house should be heated to between 18 and 21 degrees C.
  • if you cant heat all of your house heat the main living room during the day and the bed room during the night.
  • close internal doors
  • Eat well - food is a vital source of energy to help keep your body warm.
  • draw your curtains to retain heat. - If possible fit thermal lining 
  • layer your clothes - several thinner items retain heat better then 1 thick item. 
  • Dont block the radiators - place tin foil behind the radiators to reflect the heat. 
  • get financial help if you need it. - 
    • warm front scheme is a grant  for people on income or disability related benefits. you could receive up to £6000 for heating improvements such as loft insulation.  for more information go to www.warmfront.co.uk. you may be eligible if you
      • own your own home or rent it from a private landlord and 
      • you get income or disability benefits
      • you live in England
    • cold weather payments are made when the average temperature in your area over 7 days was or is expexted to be under 0 degrees C. for more information please see www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk. you may be eligible if you
      • are on income related benefit
      • receive a disability benefit
      • have a child under 5
      • have a disabled child
    • speak to you energy supplier as they may be able to offer grants or help with your bills as well as further advice.
